Photo Diary: Scenes from Morocco

I visited Morocco in December and it was an amazing experience. My sister is living in Casablanca for work so my family went to visit her over the holidays. We were there for about 11 days and we covered SO much it’s really hard to fit it all into one blog post but I’ll try!

We visited Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and the coastal city of Essaouira (yes, a lot of time spent in the car – beyond thankful to SheherazadVentures, who arranged everything). My favorite parts of the trip were by far Marrakech (the shopping for home decor = incredible) and the Atlas Mountains, where we trekked through the mountains on mules and visited a Berber village for lunch.

The culture there was so interesting and while there were a few things that took getting used to (i.e. heat isn’t a guarantee everywhere in the winter – and neither is hot water, eek!), for the most part I loved it. The people are so nice and welcoming – literally they will invite you into their homes five minutes after meeting – and they put an incredible amount of effort into everything they do, which is why they create such beautiful items!

{ This was the view from our luxe hotel in the Atlas Mountains, called Domaine Malika. A gorgeous place with fabulous rooms and great food. }

{ Lunch served in a Berber village during our trek. This is a traditional Moroccan salad made with green peppers, red onions, tomatoes, cilantro, cumin and olive oil. Amazingly enough, all of this is grown/produced right in the village! }

{ The main Moroccan food is tagine. They usually consist of meat or vegetables and couscous with a variety of flavors and are cooked in a special pot. Delicious! }

{ A dessert we came across quite often: sliced oranges and bananas sprinkled with cinnamon. Healthy and easy to make! }

moroccan-cooking-lesson{ At one of the amazing places we stayed, Riad Les Trois Mages, we took a cooking class. We learned to make a yummy soup called hairira, and of course, tagine. Cooking just one meal took almost all day since everything is fresh and made completely from scratch. }

I managed to almost completely redecorate my apartment during this trip because I was so inspired by everything I saw. I haven’t had a chance to put everything in its perfect place yet (blame the pre-fashion week craziness) but once I do I’ll be sure to post!
